Family Resources For The Flu Shot

By G. Pridgen September 9, 2020

With everything happening in our lives from e-learning to COVID testing, getting flu shots for your family is becoming more of a "must-have". Some states, like Massachusetts are requiring it, and although we are not there yet in Florida, the idea of getting a flu shot might be becoming more of a reality these days. Cost is also an issue during these difficult times and perhaps you are on a budget or maybe you don't have insurance. We know that the CDC recommends flu shots for anyone over 6 months of age but where can you go to get it done that won't become too much of a cost or an inconvenience. Here are some recommendations regarding where to go and how much services cost:

1. Your local pediatrician/family practitioner: Costs vary depending on the medical office and doctor. Scheduling an appointment is most likely needed. All ages accepted. Insurance is recommended

2. Local urgent care clinics: Costs vary depending on the office. Scheduling is helpful although not required. Minors may or may not be accepted. Insurance is recommended

3. Local pediatric urgent cares (like After Hours Pediatrics). Costs vary however, no appointment needed. After Hours even has a special online feature called "Hold My Spot In Line" which allows you to reserve a spot in the cue for services before you get there! Minors accepted. Adults are not accepted. Insurance is recommended.

4. Cleveland Clinic Express Care (Weston only). No appointment needed (good for working parents since they are open until 8 p.m. daily). Less costly than ER or urgent care. Insurance recommended. Adults only. 954.659.5000

5. Walgreens.  No appointment needed (although recommended due to high demand). Adults only. Insurance may be helpful.

6. Walmart. No costs. No appointment needed (although recommended due to high demand). Adults only (although I was told that Walmart will be receiving the protocol to give flu shots to minors due high demand very soon).

7. CVS Minute Clinic (different from CVS pharmacy). There is a cost however most insurances cover the flu shot. No appointment needed (although recommended due to high demand). BOTH ADULTS AND KIDS (ages 3 and over) received. To schedule online use the zip code of the location you want to receive services. Great option for busy parents who would need to request time off to take your children to their pediatrician. This option will allow for late option appointments.

8. If you have no insurance you may also take advantage of Broward County Florida Health services, who offers free vaccinations in two locations (Ft. Lauderdale and Pompano Beach), and likely the flu shot. 954.467.4705

9. Broward Health also offers free vaccination options and likely the flu shot.

Overall, our options are very good in our area offering a variety of choices. If there was one year the flu shot was needed, this might be the year for you. Stay safe and healthy!
